Swing Away

ChrisM

046gunn-2Down at Gooseberry this week, I was working the crowd.  Three kids 2, 4, and 5.  We were playing games and working hard.  Finally the kids were just about out of gas, I clicked off the last few shots.  I love the natural look of this one, even if it’s a pile on.  If it’s a hit or a miss with the client only time will tell, but you can’t hit the homer unless you swing away…

Sin City Inspiration

ChrisM

IMG_6650I was in a gallery in Vegas the first time I saw this classy, modern alternative to traditional framing.  Standout prints are mounted flush to the edge of heavy gatorfoam board.  This portrait sits completely flush to the wall, with a clean, minimalistic, but strong presentation.  Regardless of size, the print is very light and easy to hang. You can order a standout online or stop in the studio to see one for yourself!

Byteing the Dust

ChrisM

IMG_2136Every year in February, we offload and begin the purge of digital files from sessions the previous year that were never ordered upon. We love creating pictures but ultimately, if they are not chosen for purchase we must face the hard decision that they be banished to the ether, for storing them indefinitely in the hopes they’ll be wanted later is not a financially viable solution. This past month we just completed a major server upgrade, expanding our multi terabyte raid server, essentially doubling the space. We replaced all the hard drives,  (shown in the box above) some of which had been continually spinning 24/7 for the last five years. Personally, I don’t believe that pictures belong on hard drives as their final use. We use them as a brief pitstop, on their way to an album or portrait, book or in your wallet. That is where pictures belong, and incidentally will last their longest, immune to the changes in hardware and technology.  What do you think?

It’s a warm night in Providence, and the ice rink is doing a brisk business while I meet with a shooter at Starbucks in prep for the coming season…

I’m so blue

ChrisM

armorandmartel-20You must remember the “mood rings” that were popular sometime back, that supposedly changed color with your state of mind.  Strong color, can set the mood for an image, and need not be the standard black an white or sepia.  I use a selenium – toned color on some of my images to convey feeling sometimes, without the eco- unfriendliness of the original chemical based process.  Sometimes it’s classic monotone, other images look best with a palladium finish.  It’s a new reinvention of something artists have done since photography’s infancy, only now it’s little greener-no pun intended.

Guys and Gals last week

ChrisM

guys-and-gals

Getting siblings together for pictures might seem daunting and even during the session it might seem like chaos, but that’s the nature of photographing children. You have to work fast and let them have fun. Ready for pictures?
